RODC STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN 2015

This Action Plan has its basis in the Goals, Strategies and Tactics that make up the Long Range Plan outlined below.

Mission: To elect a government that will reclaim our democratic Canada.

Time Line Goal: Federal election date October 2015 (or sooner??)

This plan contains the What, Where, When, and Who will take the lead.

1. ‘Party of One’ Seminar: Michael Harris – seminar based on book ‘Party of One’, Oakville, Time: April ?? , June and Pat have already committed

2. Presentation: John Dupuis, York U Discussion-based Evidence (“Conservative Government’s War on Science.”) Oakville, Time: February 2015?? , Tina has committed to lead.

3. Speakers Bureau with PowerPoint, On Request:  Nicole is lead, June, Bev,  Jennifer, Hart have  committed.

4. Define a Simple Message –Jennifer has committed to lead. (Some great material at #leavesteve2015 on Youtube for everyone to look at – we should cooperate with Operation Maple??)) This messaging could be used in any of the other actions, as well as via social media. Could borrow from the ABC Book. The sooner we get this done , the better.

5. Door Drop Campaign –Tina to lead.

6. All Candidate Town Hall, Oakville,  TBA before election,  RODC – no leader yet

7. LeadNow Vote Together Campaign to elect non-Conservative candidates in ridings where the vote was very close last time, so-called swing ridings .

7A  Etobicoke Lakeshore, 26 vote victory in last election, where LeadNow has committed support – Hart has committed to lead.

7B The New “Oakville North-Burlington” Riding, would involve RODC folks on their own at least until  1500 vote pledges have been collected, no leader

Goals.
1. To inform and engage Canadians on issues and threats to democracy in Canada
2. To increase voter participation
3. To promote electoral reform in the shape of proportional representation
4. To take direct action to defend or enhance democracy

Goal 1. To inform and engage Canadians on issues and threats to democracy in Canada

Strategy 1.1 Consistently communicate our concerns about democracy in Canada and consistently communicate proposed solutions for dealing with those concerns

Tactics How to Communicate Our Concerns and Possible Solutions
1.1.1 Define a simple message on the loss of democracy in Canada, told with stories that resonate with the average voter: What is wrong with democracy in Canada/How it can be better?
Need: We would need a team to work on this and report back

1.1.2 Organize workshops/ invited speakers for other progressive groups and hold our own All Candidates meeting

1.1.3 Run our own doorstep campaign, ask specific questions, introduce RODC organization, leave literature and a phone number to call for follow-up
Need: All supporters, using materials we have developed

1.1.4 Develop a Speakers Bureau, to go out and speak to schools, colleges, local groups
Need: Team of speakers, to develop and present consistent material

1.1.5 Create a “buzz” on social media (Twitter/FaceBook) perhaps by using humour, or by organizing a contest
Need: Team comfortable with using social media to work on/organize this

1.1.6 Partner with youth,  e.g. holding a video competition for Sheridan College students or speaking to High School civics classes

Goal 2 To increase voter participation

Strategy 2.1 Communicate with the public

Tactics:
2.1.1 Invite high profile speakers that attract large audiences outside our traditional base, (are you concerned about the future of your children/grandchildren?); 
Need: Team to identify a speaker (e.g Michael Harris) arrange a date and organize the event 

2.1.2 Use Social Media (FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube)
Need: Team that is comfortable with using social media to work on this

2.1.3 Make live presentations to a variety of demographic groups

2.1.4 Hold local media accountable for informing the population

Strategy 2.2 Communicate with our community

Tactics:
2.2.1 Collaborate with like-minded groups from Fair Vote, LeadNow, Council of Canadians

2.3.1 Mount  petition for on-line voting using Avaaz and Change.org
Need: Team to design and mount a petition

2.3.2 Collaborate with allies Unions, Council of Canadians, LeadNow to promote on-line vote and strategic voting (we will need to start early to ensure that we are united on this!)

Strategy 2.3 Advocate for on-line voting

Tactics

Goal 3. To promote electoral reform in the shape of proportional representation

Strategy 3.1 Engage incumbents and political candidates on issues and threats to democracy identified by us focusing on electoral issues

Tactics
 3.1.1 Educate aspiring political representatives
Need: Members write letters, arrange face to face meetings

3.1.2 Host an All Candidates debate with a democracy theme

3.1.3 Attend debates hosted by others and ask questions/make suggestions
Need: Whole group involved in organization (we have done this before!)

3.1.4 Offer civics education to the public

3.1.5 Provide examples of overwhelming situations with positive outcomes, to foster a more positive and optimistic attitude, to increase engagement and participation

Strategy 3.2 Advocate widely for PR

Tactics:
 3.2.1  Explore a media strategy for how to make this topic accessible

3.2.2  Explain the benefits NOT the mechanics

3.2.3 Identify costs/dollar losses associated with our antiquated systems

3.2.4 PR leads to minority governments which worries voters BUT  Minority governments in the past have led to universal medicare and pensions. This is democracy!

Goal 4: To take direct action to defend or enhance democracy

Strategy 4.1 Independently and together with other like-minded groups influence politicians in their decision-making and influence voters during election campaigns to choose the path that best enhances democracy

Tactics:
4.1.1 Take part in education, phoning, and/or letter-writing campaigns, often together with other groups. 
4.1.2 Take part in various campaigns to inform / recruit people / voters to a specific pledge / tactic. 
4.1.3 Take part in, or organize protests or marches to draw attention to a specific issue and the facts around it.
